Daisy Chains

We had to pick and make a daisy chain. It was not easy to make one. I was getting grumpy because I couldn't make the cut in the stalk of the flower to put the piece through.

I counted the petls on three different flowers. 1 had 21 the other 25 and the last one had 28 petals on it

on this side of the photo, you can see the petals I took off the flowerhead. It was very hard to count them being so small

This is a closeup of the chain. you can see where we used our nails to cut into the stalks and put the stem through
This is a close up photo of a daisy I picked. I like the brightness of the yellow middle

BINGO! Get to know a tree

What to do

1. Choose a tree

Head into your backyard and choose a tree

This is a kowhai tree. I had to do some activities for boys brigade so have a bark rubbing, leaves and flowers from the tree we have in the garden.

2. Record your observations

What animals do you notice in and around this tree? We have heard bellbirds, tui's and seen lots of wax eyes in the tree. Mum said the wood pigeons love being in there too. Under the tree is chickens as it is on the edge of the chicken run

Record any interactions between animals and the tree. Look closely for birds and insects on the branches, trunk, and in the surrounding soil.

Consider:

  • What reasons would the observed animals have for visiting or living on this tree? The bellbirds, tuis, and pigeons love to eat the nectar from the flowers. The chickens would use the tree to hide in the shade on a hot day.

  • What else do you notice about this tree?  The flowers are yellow and drop down in bunches. the leaves on the tree are very small and in lines the bark is smooth it's a young tree. Mum said they turn a very dark brown colour almost black colour when very old. When Mum was younger she had three in her yard and used to play and climb in them when the birds weren't in them Pigions used to love them and dive bomb her when flying around the tree

  • Would you notice different things around this tree at different times of day? I think in the mornings it would be more busier with birds waking up

  • Would you notice different things on different days and over the coming weeks. On a wet day, I don't think you would see much. i don't like coming out in the rain so why would birds On a fine day they would be plenty happening the birds would be extra hungry from hiding in the rain

  • Would you notice different things about this tree at different times and over the coming weeks? As the birds go from flower to flower they would eat all the nectar and then be nothing left the birds will leave the tree alone

Conservation Week Bingo

For conservation week we have a bingo board to fill in. This is my something down low. It was to wet to go outside but I found this or mum found this first.

Yesterday while Mum was in my room she found a honey bee on the window sill. It probably flew in on the weekend when the windows were open. It looked pretty sad so we gave it a sugar-water drink and then put it outside on the porch by the kitchen. Mum said the water should give it some energy to be able to fly away back home.

It was really cool to see one up close. I was reading a book yesterday with my reading group about a man who photo's bugs and insects in his garden. This reminded me of that.

Lego Weekly Challenge

This is a white heron and beside it is Mum's version of a New Zealand Falcon. She wanted to make something as well

I'm going to tell you about the white heron. The white heron is on the New Zealand two dollar coin

The white heron is found in New Zealand on the West Coast on waitangiroto river down at Whatatroa. The Maori name for it is kotuku. You can take a guided jet boat ride to see them from September to January when they are breeding.  Birds make their nests in the crowns of tree ferns or in kōwhai or kāmahi trees along the bank of the river

We see them on our way to town in the farm paddocks, creeks, and on the river. When we go into lake mahinapua for a look you can always see some before September.

They eat little fish like whitebait, eels, frogs, mice, insects, and small birds like wax eyes.

Mum said my neighbour has to put netting over her fish pond as she had one that used to come for breakfast and eat her gold fish. It would sit on the roof of the house and wait

It must have looked like a real bird to my cat as this is what it looks like after she attacked it!

Boys Brigade

 Boys Brigade Lockdown Activities

August 25th 2021 By Toby and Mum

I wasn’t too happy to hear Mum had contacted John while I was out with Dad in the truck to find out about activities for brigade but when she said John had said no we would wait until Friday to see what happens and sort it next week It was ok. I was a little upset I might not get all my stars to carry on to the gold section but mum said im sure there will be a chance to do something to make these days up if and when we can. Then Charlotte messaged Mum and said she was happy to hear I wanted to do some extra things that she would send them to Mum. They weren’t too bad and I got to choose what ones I wanted to do and if I wanted to do them.

The three tasks were

1. Identify 5 native plants and take a leaf or bark rubbing.

2. Prepare and cook breakfast, lunch or tea

Extra star for setting the table

3. Create my own obstacle course and time myself doing it

I thought really, I’m not cooking I can’t do that but after talking to Mum and deciding that it could be an easy one like chicken wraps, Yes that was going to be the first thing I’ll do.

Below are the photo’s Mum took of me preparing, cooking and plating the chicken wraps I made. I really wasn’t into cooking the chicken. I’ve been in the kitchen when the pan has spat at mum and didn’t like it. Mum said she wouldn’t let that happen to me so we started prepping. I first started with cutting up mushrooms and putting them into a pan with some butter. These were for mum’s wraps, I don’t like mushrooms.

I cut the chicken up watching the sharp knife. It was hard to get used to cutting something like chicken but I got there. I put it into a bowl with oil and the crumb mix. Mixed it all around. Mum got the pan hot and I put the chicken into the pan to cook. It didn’t spit but I was still afraid of the pan and dropped a piece right after mum took the photo of me placing the chicken on the pan. We rubbished that piece as you can’t cook it after it’s been on the floor. Yuck

Mum carried on cooking the chicken after this as I was not going to do it anymore. While mum was cooking the chicken I set the table for us. Placemats knife and fork a glass for a drink and a paper towel for our hands afterward. Yes the knives and forks were just for show as we used our hands to eat these

Once the chicken was cooked she put it into a dish with a paper towel to drain any extra oil off of the chicken.

We put the wraps in the microwave to warm them up I spread mayonnaise onto them added cheese after that to mine and lettuce first to mums ones. Mushrooms for mum’s sour cream for both of them the chicken on top.

They were really easy to make and really yummy to eat. Making them myself I felt really good and if mum lets me I’d do it again. I might even have a go and try something else next time.

Now I have to choose my next activity to do and get more stars

science experiment

flower capillary action

On Wednesday Mum and I were chatting about daffodil day coming up and she said about an experiment that we could do with some of the flowers in the garden. When it stopped raining we went out and picked some for a vase.

Mum said I needed to get 2 other glasses so we could put some in each. when we had done that I put some food colouring into the water.

We talked about how flowers need water and how they get the water from the ground or in a vase. This is called capillary action. In flowers, there are thin tubes in the stems and the water goes up these to the flowers. When we put the flowers into the coloured water this is going to be sucked up.

this is a photo of the daffidol up close before we added some to the coloured water

After tea I had a look at the flowers. I noticed that the blue ones were really sucking the water up and you could see the tiny tubes in them turning blue already. The red ones not so much. We decided to add more colouring to the water to see if it made any difference.

These photo's I took before I went to bed. You can really see the blue coming through.

The photo's below are the next morning

this is all the flowers together I like how you can deffinalty see the different colours and the veins in the petals.

I took this photo before bed on the second night after swapping one flower over to the other coloured water. this is the red flower to the blue coloured water and you can really see the different colours in the petals

this was a fun experiment to do

Photo Challenge

Bubble Photo

Mrs Long put a class challenge on our home learning to take a family photo. We had to put everyone in the photo that was in our bubble. I was able to get our dog Kyla in it but not the cats we have. Fluffy Minx Marley and Naharla would not get in the photo with us.

I did not read the instructions very well and our neighbour came over to take the photo for us on my Mums phone. I wanted the photo to be all of us on our bikes. We all like going down the beach on the bikes.

In the photo is my Mum Nina Dad Sean dog Kyla on Dads knee and me in the middle on my bike.

Mrs Kings Kite Challenge

😎  Kite Challenge 😎

Mrs King set the whole school and kite making challenge and i wanted to do this one.
Mum said I had to search on the internet how to make a kite I looked at lots of pictures and videos searching for how to make one

Mum had a search in Dads shed for some stuff to make a kite with she found some thin wood an old curtain and had to get some string from the supermarket the rope she found in the shed for the garden was all rotten and could not use it. We also needed a hot glue gun.

This is me cutting the old curtain to make the kite with scissors.

We tied the string around the frame so we could hot glue the old curtain to it and make it look like a kite

this is the kite that me and mum made
There was no wind down the beach this morning so we did not see if it would fly. I wanted to tie it to my motorbike and see if it would fly if I went riding down the beach but it was high tide when we went there and not very much beach to ride down. Mum said that if the wind picks up we could go back down and try to fly it again later.

When I am Famous

When I am famous I want to be a famous youtuber riding dirt bikes and riding quads and mini dirt bikes. I want to be good at drifts and dounts and not falling off because I can hurt myself. Also, I want to be famous at driving go karts and driving drift cars. I want to be fast at driving go karts around the turn.
When I am famous I want to go around the world to China and see the houses and I want to go to Texas and to see the new dirt bikes and the dirt bike is a kx 50.

video challenge my favourite thing to do

Donuts and Drifts my favourite thing to do

Mrs Long has set a video challenge for our class this week.
We had to make a video and it could of us helping with something or reading a story.
I chose to do something I love doing.

This is me riding my new motorbike doing donuts and drifting down on the beach and this is my favourite thing to do donuts and drifts. I had to get Mum to take the video as i couldn't do it myself and ride the bike at the same time.
To do donuts you need to get lots of speed like i did go really fast and then turn the handle bars and then you have to keep the gas up while going round the corner To get out of the donut you have to turn the handle bars the other way.
When drifting you go really fast down the beach in a straight line and then turn the handlebars one way and then the other way quickly swinging the bike at the same time.

While we were down the beach doing my video challenge we also made a hut with all the driftwood.
we are going back down later today to see if the wind and rain did any damage to it. I hope the tide didn't take it away when it came in overnight.

We used two main big sticks leaning on each other and then added the other sticks laying them on the sides to make the walls. There was a big log that I used as seat and then uncovered another smaller one for the foot rest.

Lego creation challenge

Lego creation

This my lego build that I made. It was originally a whale and a tractor.

I like it because it can fly and drive and it is used for jumping off the back of it because then you can jump into the hot tub. You can take the tail off it and the wings on the top to transform it to a truck.
The blue and white bricks under the tail at the end are a turbo to make it go really fast.

Lockdown Present

My new bike

We went to Greymouth yesterday to pick up my new bike.
We had to go to Dads work in Greymouth to pick it up they had put the wrong town on the address and it wouldn't have been delivered to Hokitika.

The bike came in a box on a crate.
it was sitting on this frame
Dad and i had to put the wheels on it we had to use blocks of wood to lift the bike up and use his tools to put it togther

It is a automatic bike. That means no gears to change like my Dads bike. My Mums bike has gears that she has to change when she rides it.
I do have this foot gear leaver this is for forward and reverse. If you are in reverse you have to put it in neutral then drive to go forward

This is the handle bars. It has brakes and the throttle. My bike also has head lights the switch is here. The lights have high and low beam
This bike has a thumb throttle. Some bikes have twist leavers to make it go

Today I got to go for a ride when the rain stopped
It was so much fun. We went to the beach. We are able to go to the beach as it is close to our house and in our bubble

Mum took some photo's for me
I can not wait to go over to the beach again and use my bike.
I did a donut on my bike and I drifted it as well.

This is cheese

I was doing some reading on study ladder and learning about cheese and how it is made.
Mum said she had some different cheese in the fridge if I wanted to taste it.

Double cream blue cheese

This is the cheese out of the wrapper and this it double cream blue cheese and on the outside it has black wax all around it. The wax on the outside of the cheese helps to stop mould growing on it.
This is me eating the cheese. I thought the cheese tasted gross and I had to spit it out after trying it. Mum laughed at me she thought it was really funny. She likes this cheese on crackers.

Guess who did it?

Mum went into her secret stash of goodies over the weekend and found this game called Cluedo.
It was tricky to work out what time the cake was eaten who ate the cake and what drink that person had with the cake.
It was lots of fun.
I can not wait to play with Mum again.
